Saturday 9: Lady Liberty

Hear Barbra Streisand sing it here.

1) This song is a Valentine to the Statue of Liberty. Have you ever visited Lady Liberty?  No, I haven't, but I would like to.

2) When you combine the lady herself and her pedestal, she stands 22 stories high. What's the tallest building you've ever been in?  I have no idea when it comes to traditional buildings. Having said that, I was going to say the Washington Monument, but then I looked and the Skylon Tower in Niagara Falls is about 200 feet taller than that...so that's the tallest "building" I've been in.

3) Her crown represents universal liberty with seven spikes for the seven seas. Without looking it up, can you name the seven seas?  The Mediterranean, the Aegean, the Red, the Black, the Caspian, the Baltic....am I close?

4) The song was written by Desmond Child, a Cuban-American from Gainesville, home of the University of Florida. In 1965, a team of UF scientists invented Gatorade. Do you have any Gatorade in your home right now?  Yes, there is apple and fruit punch Gatorade in the house. I drink it to help with leg cramps and the grands like it.

5) While best known for his work with KISS, Bon Jovi and Cher, Desmond Child was nominated for an Emmy for his work on the Muppets 2003 holiday special. This morning, as we enjoy summer, what's the first Christmas carol that pops into your head?  Jingle Bells

6) Desmond wrote this song specifically for Barbra Streisand. Watching her record it was a dream come true and he found himself standing very close to her as she sang. When he asked if he was "hovering," she suggested it might be better if he gave her a little more space. Does it bother you when someone stands very close or reads over your shoulder?  Yes

7) Fireworks were introduced to celebrate the 4th because they represent the "rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air." When did you most recently sing "The Star Spangled Banner?"  We played it a couple of times at work yesterday, but I didn't sing it. I don't have the voice for easier songs, let alone that one.

8) John Adams predicted the 4th would be observed with "pomp and parades." Does your community have a parade in honor of the day?  Yep, we have one of the biggest parades around. We also have a Miss 4th of July Pageant, a block party, concerts, a carnival of sorts, and fireworks. Believe it or not, it's actually scaled back to just a couple of pre-events (pageant and block party) and the big day with everything else. For years the events went on for over a week! Covid changed that.

9) Celebrity chef Rachael Ray says she considers mini-hamburgers, or "sliders," the All-American food. What will/did you dine on this 4th of July?  We had burgers, hotdogs, brats, and smoked sausage; potato salad; corn-on-the-cob; hobo beans; watermelon, cantaloupe, and cherries; blueberry cobbler; and cookies.

Thanks to Sam for running the Saturday 9 and bringing
us the music and questions each week!

  2. #2 I also thought of the Washington Monument. I was on the 15th floor which would be around 200’
#8 When I was little and in scouting I rode on a float in the town parade, we were “camping” and roasting marshmallows over a fake fire.
#9 Peaches are in season at a local orchard and I been making peach cobbers topped with vanilla ice cream!

  4. Wow, you had a big meal! Good for you. The 7 seas thing really was puzzling, as you noted on my blog. I think that could be answered in different ways. My husband likes the orange Gatorade. He drinks it in the summer when he sweats a lot on the farm.

  5. The economy is doing so well just about everyone is in high spirits. Even our little 'burg had fireworks and I think a parade. That's awesome.
The menu sounds so good. As you've probably seen on FaceBook, we had seafood (fish, shrimp, etc.). Just had to be different. lol ❤️

  6. Josh and I were visiting my mom on Tuesday and they had someone singing hymns with the residents and after that they sang patriotic songs, so we got to participate in that. That was the last time I sang The Star Spangled Banner. I don't have the voice for it either, so it was quiet. Hahahaha

Great News!

At least I hope it is. I saw my PCP today and it didn't take him long at all to diagnose bursitis in my hip. He said I could continue to...
