Likes & Dislikes (and Friday Photos)

Things I like...

- Used book sales! I went to one with Mom last weekend. I'm going to one with a friend from high school today. Tomorrow is the one at our local library.

- Rubber chore boots and clogs. Best things ever for slipping on my feet to walk over to our daughter's home through the often soggy (because it's more yard than road) alley behind our houses.

- Cool things in the sky. I got these photos of the sky last night.

Before the cool clouds, there was this cool (yet weird) color to the sky and air. I didn't get out to take photos of that. This is one my daughter took. There is no filter used. It really looked like this.

- Cucumbers. I could eat them till the cows come home.

- Seeing lots of bees this summer. They had been conspicuously missing for quite a few years.

- Leftovers for breakfast. I'd rather eat "breakfast food" later in the day.

- Cozy mysteries that include recipes. Some are way too complicated, but I've found some keepers.

- Ozark Mountain insulated cups from Walmart. They work as well as, if not better than Yeti and for a fraction of the price.

- Blueberry Muffin flavored Kit-Kat bars. Sooooo yummy!

Things I don't like...

- The cat won't stay off the kitchen island and knocks anything sitting on it off onto the floor, then bats it around until I have to fish it out from under something.

- Super-duper high heat and humidity.

- Hearing bad news. A pastor we've known for years had a major heart attack last week. The surgery to put a stent in the blocked artery that caused it went well, but he has never woke up from it. Yesterday his son shared that testing has shown extensive brain damage. The doctors don't expect that he will ever wake up. He is a couple of years younger than me.

- The current economy.

- Feeling like you can't trust the government or the media to tell you the straight truth.

- Pouring money into our 401K so we don't owe the IRS at the end of the year, but knowing that right now, that money is pretty much evaporating.

- Black licorice (but Mom bought Key Lime Pie, filled Twizzlers the other day...they are da bomb!)

- When my faith isn't what it should be on a matter.

- Saying goodbye.

A Hot Mess of Friday Thoughts

I've been quiet this week. Taking and processing the things in the news, I guess, and there has been a lot to process, hasn't there? If you keep your eyes on everything that's going on in the world it is easy to slip into negative thinking and feel overwhelmed and stressed by it.

It's times like these that I am glad I have placed my hope in Jesus Christ and no matter what is going on in this world, I know that God Almighty is in control. I like using that specific name for God. Almighty means "having complete power, omnipotent, all-powerful, supreme, invincible, unconquerable." That is my God. He is big. He is powerful. He can't be beaten. He rules over all. He is a faithful God, He never fails to do what He promises. It may not be in my timing or the way I think I want it, but it will be at the perfect time in the perfect way. And He is personal. He loves me, little, insignificant in the scheme of the universe me. He loves you, too, and He has since before you were born, before the world existed even.

Keeping the absolute truth of God in mind in these times makes it easier to still be thankful and though I am a day late, I still want to link up with Rebecca Jo @ Knit By God's Hand for Thankful Thursday.

Things I am thankful for today...

** Knowing I can talk directly to God and that He hears my prayers.

** All of my family that has been fighting illness finally saw their doctors and got treatment this week. Tim has a touch of pneumonia, Megan has a sinus infection and both ears are infected, her husband also has a touch of pneumonia.

** Considering how awful Tim's cough has been I'm thankful the pneumonia was caught early. I can't imagine how bad it would have been had it had more time.

** I've remained healthy with all those germs swirling around me!

** I'm thankful that my friend Angel's (she's one of my former clients) family wants me to continue meeting her twice a month even though the agency finally found her another companion.

** Colton graduated from preschool and will be heading off to kindergarten in August.

There was some drama two days before the end of the year between a mother, a teacher, and a local police officer. I hate to say it, but the mother was off the rails and reacted badly and waaaay out of proportion to being asked to move her vehicle. She even returned to the school to rail at the officer and school staff. She also posted on Facebook, ripping into the staff and the other parents who didn't come to her defense, going so far as to say to the other mothers that she "hoped to God their daughters don't grow up to be like them."

Because of her actions, the school cancelled the little graduation ceremony that was supposed to take place yesterday. All because she was asked to move her vehicle. Crazy.

** Lots of time with my granddaughter, Leah. She is such a joy and she loves spending time with me.

Lately she has enjoyed walking around and looking at all the pretty flowers blooming in our neighborhood. Of all my four grandchildren, she is the only one to show interest in learning the appreciation and enjoyment of nature my grandmother taught me. Funny since her momma was definitely in the "not interested" camp when she was little.

Yesterday I had Leah most of the day and we went to the garden center together. We walked around with her pointing out the different flowers and colors and at each one insisting, "Smell it, Nanny." We picked out bright pink petunias and a mix of white petunias and red petunias with white stripes. We also picked out several packets of sunflower seeds to plant around my deck. We saved a few of each for her to plant at home. If they all grow it should be quite a show. She chose 4 varieties: little yellow ones that are only 2' tall; autumn colored ones (reds and oranges with gold) that should be 5-7' tall; a golden mammoth variety that grows to 12'; and another large variety that is a pale yellow and grows up to 15'!

** Jasper finally seems to be slowing down and mellowing out. The wild and crazy times are just a now and then thing rather than an all day, every day thing.

** I'm also thankful, that in addition to growing into the large size of a Maine Coon cat, Jasper has retained all his fluffiness and his beautiful mane. Megan's cat, who is a brother from an earlier litter, has the size but has lost all his fluffiness and looks like a regular cat, albeit a BIG one. The one our son-in-law's parents have is Jasper's brother from the same litter and he is much smaller and now Megan reports he is losing his fluffiness.

** As we begin the Memorial Day weekend and the start of the summer season, I am especially thankful for all the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect our way of life and ensure that freedom rings out across this land.

** For all of you who come to visit my blog and have become friends. We may never meet face to face, but you are friends who are loved and appreciated.

Now, since it's Friday...

Some things I like:

  • Hearing a lot more conversation, as opposed to screaming and posturing, following the tragedy in Texas. People seem to be waking up to the fact that we need to work together and change a lot of things, not just one thing.
  • Switching to lighter, summer meals.
  • Sitting on the porch, enjoying my flowers and my family.

  • Bare feet or flip-flops (I wear Vionics flip-flops so lots of arch support).
  • A perfectly grilled steak. My dad made the best ones!
Some things I don't like:

  • When people are so set in their views that we can't even have an honest discussion that doesn't devolve into angry shouting and insults. Just hear each other out, for crying out loud. It's called respect. We used to give it to each other.
  • Paying higher prices for groceries...and having them go bad very quickly because they are already old when they get to the store (I assume).
  • Paying higher prices for a favorite food, having it be a yet smaller size, and then being disappointed because it's not the same as it was because the seller can't get the same ingredients or has to use inferior ingredients to keep the cost down.
  • All the extra commercials some of the streaming services we subscribe to (or maybe it's Roku?) are adding. It seems like on some of them there's a commercial break every 5 minutes.
Wishing you all a happy, safe, and blessed Memorial Day weekend!

Top 3's and Likes & Dislikes

I stole the first part of today's post from Rebecca Jo.

Three things that make a lot of sense to me.

  1. The truth of the gospel of Jesus.
  2. Taking care of our own citizens before sending our money and resources to other places.
  3. The value of having extended family nearby.

Three things that do not make sense to me
  1. The hate and closed mindedness that flows from both the left and the right.
  2. Asking someone for help/advice, then refusing to listen.
  3. Tik Tok
Three things I’d like to explore
  1. Greece
  2. The Library of Congress
  3. The Smithsonian (all the buildings)
Three things I have no interest in
  1. Nascar
  2. Celebrity gossip
  3. Hearing how great someone thinks they are.
Three things I have more than enough of but always want to buy
  1. Books/journals
  2. Pens and markers
  3. Purses
Three things I am always in search of
  1. Shoes that fit, give good support, and are actually cute.
  2. Jeans/shorts/leggings...and type of bottom that fits right.
  3. Bargains
Things I've recently checked off of my To Do list
  1. Mammogram
  2. Get back on track with weight loss doctor.
  3. Got the Poodle groomed.
Things I have had on my To Do list forever
  1. Clean out my office and organize it.
  2. Clean out the useless corner cabinet in the kitchen (runs back along side the stove and it's impossible to see what's in it or even reach most of it because the door doesn't open all the way).
  3. Clean the windows.
And now for some likes and dislikes.

I like...

...having most of my immediate family nearby...
...freezer pops on the deck with the grands...
...movie afternoons on a hot day with the shades drawn and the AC on...
...nice people who build others up...
...that my granddaughter and I "get" each other...

...the feel of the grass on my toes...
...the smell of freshly cut grass...
...blooming spring flowers...

I dislike...

...jumping from early spring straight into heat and humidity...
...my mom's need to put others down (strangers, family, friends...it doesn't matter...today my daughter told her she'd lost 9 lbs. and Mom looked her up and down and said, "Where? Did you get a haircut?")...
...wood bees (we have an infestation)...
...the current economy, supply shortages, inflation, and fuel prices...
...waiting for the next season of my favorite shows...
...the bugs that come with warm weather...
...my refrigerator...

Likes & Dislikes, #12

Things I am liking today...

A good, steady, all-day rain.

These weird (but genius) little rubber boots for the kitchen stools.

Pentatonix's version of Hallelujah.

A blister that's healed enough to wear socks and shoes again.

The sunburn from 2 weeks ago is finally done peeling.

Fresh (relatively) corn-on-the-cob in the grocery store.

The rains have kept them from digging up our street, which includes our yard, to put in a new catch basin and drain pipes to prevent flooding on the next street over from us. Not looking forward to the mess and noise just to keep a small section of a street from being covered with a bit of water.

The 20th Anniversary luncheon for the Faith in Action charity I attended with my mom yesterday. It was very nice.

The lovely centerpieces that were made and donated by someone
and are next going on to decorate a Roaring 20's wedding.

The Valley School of Ligonier, a private school I attended nearly 50 years ago,
provided entertainment. This photo is of the show choir who sang a medley
of Beatles' songs and Disney songs.

They also brought their percussion group who played the
Mission Impossible theme.

And finally, they brought the handbell choir, who performed a
medley of Beatles' songs. This is the same group I belonged to
when I attended the school...though it's now an elective. When I
attended every girl HAD to participate.

It's payday!

And things I'm not liking so much today...

My daughter calling by 8:00 nearly EVERY. STINKING. MORNING. to make a claim on my time. I sympathize with her anxiety and other issues...I do, but anyone who doesn't think they take a toll on those around them is WRONG.

Two more calls to ask if I'm ready to take the kids yet.

Gas prices went up again today. It's now $4.45/gallon.

One watermelon cost $9 yesterday.

Having to leave my nice cozy house to go out in the rain to get prescriptions filled.

My cat. He's having one of his wild mornings.

Every night my husband untucks the sheets at the bottom and pulls the fitted sheet off the mattress at the top. Every day is like making the bed up fresh. I'd get a job at a hotel if I wanted to have to do that! How does he even manage it?

The White House's wishy-washy stand on the media and others disclosing the
home addresses of the Supreme Court justices so people can protest and harass them at their homes. No matter where you stand on the abortion issue, that should be a completely unacceptable action.

Things I like...

  • the doctor saying your test results, which the online chart made sound bad, are really nothing to worry about.

Likes & Dislikes #9

Things I like...

...warm razzleberry pie with vanilla bean ice cream...

...Allstate commercials featuring Mayhem...

...sleeping with the fan on...

...Lindt chocolate truffle Easter eggs...

...being home for my family...

...the 70's & 80's...

...funny "scary" movies (think Beetlejuice, Abbott & Costello Meet the Mummy, and Scooby-Doo).

And things I don't...

...endless spam calls on my cell phone...

...when people are just mean all the time out of habit...

...getting blisters from shoes...

...mental illness and what it steals...

...when an otherwise good show or movie suddenly throws in something inappropriate...

...how many wonderful entertainers we've lost in the last couple of years...

...waiting, doesn't matter what for.

I had the experience of going with my daughter to her late brother-in-law's house yesterday. There were just a few more things they needed to get out before they walk away and let the bank have it all.

All along she has been telling us tales of how bad it was inside. I believed her, as I have sadly had a few clients who live in homes that would be perfect candidates for the show Hoarders. And yet, I was not prepared for his house.

As soon as you entered it...through the garage, screened porch, or right into the house, it didn't matter...you were slammed by an overwhelming, relentless stench. It was a combination of months (maybe years) of garbage, dampness, mold, mildew, old dirty diapers, dog urine and feces, and groceries that had been carried in, sat down, still in the bags and left to rot.

I was seeing the house after they had removed a lot of stuff the family wanted to keep. But there was still so much there. Things that belonged to the man's ex's other children, clothes, everything in the kitchen, movies, video game systems and games, records, multiple stereos, huge fish tanks...left because no one wants to deal with it or the mess or try to clean it to make it useable.

Part of the kitchen ceiling had fallen a long time ago and was never repaired so all that dampness and mold coming in. The living room floor is buckled and humped up in several places under the carpet...water damage? Old food and dirty dishes were piled as high as the bed in the bedroom where he had spent the last few months and dirty diapers were piled the length of the dresser and 2 feet high. The food that was carried in was all rotting, some to a complete liquid state, gallons of milk had sat for so long they exploded. They found the dog dead in the basement of neglect...bags and cans of dog food were everywhere. I did not see the bathroom. The door was closed and my daughter said no one ever needed to see in there so I can only imagine.

I am so sorry this young man was obviously so mentally ill along with physically ill, but what truly breaks my heart is thinking about Sarah running around in that house. Ugh. I can't even imagine being ill enough to think that was okay for my kid. I can't comprehend that her mother did visit from time to time and knew what the house was like, actually stayed there, and left Sarah there when she left.

Yet, I watch shows like Hoarders and know that this happens more often than we realize in this world of ours. I supposed it is just another sign of the times and that we are growing ever nearer to when the Lord comes back.
