Saturday 9: You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To

Saturday 9: You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To (1943)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Dinah Shore goes on about listening to the breeze. Is it windy, breezy, or still where you are today?  It's been still today (Friday), but it was sure windy last night when strong thunderstorms rolled through.

2) The August moon is bright in Dinah's musical fantasy. Let's look at your calendar. Is anything special coming up in August (birthdays, anniversaries, vacation getaways ...)?  August 4-6 I'm going to my biological father's family reunion. It's the first they've had since I met him in 2020. I'm excited and terribly nervous/anxious/sick all at the same time as it will be my first time meeting everyone except my father, my sister and her husband, and one of my brothers and his family. Then August 15 is my mom's and my birthday.

3) Dinah was one of TV's pioneers. Her first show was a 15-minute variety show that ran two nights/week in 1951. What's the most recent show you watched?  Ancient Aliens is currently on the television. I don't particularly buy into most of their theories, but I love seeing all the amazing archeological sites they visit...places I've never even heard of before. Tonight, though, it made me laugh when they were talking about the Kecksburg, PA UFO mystery. One of the experts gushed about having had the privilege of sitting down to speak face to face with one of the witnesses. The witness is the father of one of our daughter's high school friends and is well known locally (and more recently than the Kecksburg incident) for imbibing a "bit" too much and seeing Bigfoot on multiple occasions. I'm wondering if he told the expert about Bigfoot, too.

(By the way, the Kecksburg UFO Festival is going on this weekend.)

4) She followed that in 1956 with the Dinah Shore Chevy Show. It was an hour long and sponsored by the car company. At the end of every show Dinah encouraged her viewers to "see the USA in your Chevrolet ..." Today Chevrolets are still the most popular cars manufactured by General Motors. Tell us about your car.  It's an 8-year-old Toyota Camry. It's got less than 100K miles and has never had any serious issues so as long as it keeps on running well I'll hang on to it for now.

5) From 1970 to 1991, Dinah hosted daytime TV talk shows and found tremendous success, winning 6 Emmy Awards and repeatedly appearing in the Gallup Poll of America's most admired women. Do you remember her?  I think I sort of remember her being on and my parents watching her, but I don't remember anything more than that.

6) Dinah was such an avid golfer that, in 1972, she founded one of the LPGA's major tournaments. Though now officially titled The Chevron Championship, it's still often referred to as "The Dinah Shore" in her memory. Do you golf? If not, would you like to learn?  I know how to play and I have played in my younger days, but I haven't played in years except for mini golf.

7) In 1943, when "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" was popular, so were tablecloths. It was common to have cotton tablecloths for everyday use, fun and festive ones for 4th of July and Christmas, and linen for formal occasions. Do you use tablecloths in your home?  I do...and I have everyday ones and special occasion ones.

8) Beatle George Harrison was born in 1943. Which of the Fab Four is your favorite?  When I was a kid I really liked Ringo, but I can't say I have a favorite now.

9) Random question: Would you rather live on a houseboat or in a trailer?  I would need to see both before I decided. There are some pretty nice examples of both out there.

  1. #2: I'm sure they want to like you. After all, they invited you! So remember you have a halo of goodwill when you go in.
#3: So he's seen a UFO & Big Foot? Some people have all the luck! :)

    1. "A halo of goodwill..." I like that! Yep, he's seen both. He claims he's seen Bigfoot multiple times...the most famous of which involved him sleeping (it off) in his car in an isolated area and waking up to Bigfoot leaning in the window looking him in the eye.

  3. Your visit will be fine. You're terrific, so what's not to like? I expect to still be driving my Camry in 2033, at the rate we're putting miles on it.

    1. Well, thank you for the kind words! It means a lot. I hope to trade my Camry for an SUV in a year or so. It's at 94K right now and I put about 100 miles a week on it. The big thing is that as my arthritis worsens, it's not the most comfortable.

  4. I love my Fusion and will drive it until it dies. I just turned 80,000 on my last trip.

    1. I had a Fusion that I loved and my son (who works for Toyota) and my husband worked out a deal to trade it in for a Rav 4 without me knowing until we got to the dealership. I wasn't happy at first, but I did end up loving my Rav, too.

    1. It was long and lots of lightening and thunder but we did not get the worst of it for a change. Our area is situated such that we usually get hit hard.

  7. I'm sure glad to you didn't get the worst of it, for once. It looked horrid.

  8. Fun questions today!! There really are some amazing houseboats and campers out there. I'm looking forward to hearing about your reunion - just a few weeks away now!! xo

  9. Hi Stacy. Interesting answers. I am sure glad you are going to that family reunion. I hope you have a memorable time. I drive a 2015 Honda CRV that I am hoping to trade for a new one in the next year or so before I retire. I am thinking I will probably get another Honda CRV - just a new one. My husband drives a 2020 Dodge Charger - best looking car in our neighborhood. I hope you have a good Sunday. See you again soon!

  10. Oh yes...there is mini golf too. Played that a couple of times. Not my thing. So when we had a daytrip with the heart organisation to a mini golf facility I offered to take my camera... That worked fine for me.

    Enjoy your week!
