Wednesday Hodgepodge

Linking up with Joyce.
1. "A daughter's a daughter all her life, but a son's a son til he takes a wife." What say you? Elaborate.  I completely agree based on my own experience...though I know there are those who are exceptions to the "rule."

My daughter remains very close, living right next door. In fact, at times, I feel she's too close to us, but that would probably be a bit different if her husband worked any shift other than midnight.

As for my son, I recently read a book called A Son Is a Son Till He Takes a Wife. It's about sons who marry women who poison them against their family and seek to separate them from their family permanently. That pretty much sums up what happened with us and our son. At this point it's been over 2 years since we've had any communication with him. I continue to pray and hope, but as my husband says, "It is what it is."

2. Something you've seen recently that was 'cuter than a June bug' This. My grandson drew a picture of him and his mommy inside a heart yesterday because he "loves her so much."

3. 'You can't buy happiness, but you can buy ice cream and that's pretty much the same thing.' Agree or disagree? Last time you had a serving of happiness ice cream?  Dish-cone-milkshake-sundae...which one do you choose?  Ice cream isn't really a favorite of mine. I like it, but I don't love it or usually choose it first for a treat. That said, I did have a root beer float last week when we took the grandkids for ice cream. I usually choose a float or a cone (sugar, please) and I prefer hard ice cream to soft-serve.

4. What is one way/area in which you're currently 'swimming against the tide'?  Well, aren't we all swimming against the tide of inflation and ridiculous gas prices? And the ridiculous mindset taking over the world?

5. Three things you're looking forward to this summer?  Seeing my biological/birth father, playing in the pool with the grandchildren, lots of reading.

6. Insert your own random thought here. I'm working through Priscilla Shirer's Bible study on Elijah and today I'm learning to look at the times of troubles or problems, not as a bad thing, but as a call from God to move on to a new thing, the next step He has planned for me. Comfort creates complacency. When resources begin to dry up, relationships sour, or whatever...it's His way of telling me I've stayed long enough in a circumstance, I've learned what He wanted me to learn, and now He has something else for me to learn. It's the next step in the process of refining me into who He has planned for me to be...and it is a process that will continue as long as I have breath.

  1. What? There's someone else besides me who's not crazy for ice cream? Woot! Sadly, Tom's DIL sounds much like yours. His son makes obligatory phone calls at Christmas and Father's Day -- but it's ackward at best. I'd hoped our Bible study group would have chosen Elijah -- but they chose He Speaks To Me instead. Anything Priscilla does is great. Love Colton's sweet heart!

    1. Yeah, our son was never very good about acknowledging holidays or special days and when he did bother it was at the tail end of the day when he didn't have anything else to do and it was painfully awkward.

  2. Sorry about your son. I have one brother who has gone down that road, too. It was so hard on our parents. Your grandson is cuter than a June bug!!

    1. Thank you. Since estrangement from my son became my reality, I've become a bit of a student of the subject and it breaks my heart to see just how many parents find themselves in these shoes in this age. There are, of course, awful parents out there, but in what seems to be the majority of cases the reason is simply that the parents don't live up to the adult child's expections of who they should be...or there is no readily evident reason at all.

  4. I'm sorry about your son. It is what it is, but still painful I'm sure. There are very few ice cream fanatics in the HP today. My hubs is one for sure-he'd love a bowl of ice cream every night. I enjoy Priscilla Shirers studies too, have not done Elijah. Currently working through Exodus using the Jen Wilkin study guides. It's excellent.

    1. I'm not an ice cream fanatic, but I saw a commercial last night for the Ninja Creami...that could be a game changer!

  5. Sorry about your son, my friend. Rootbeer floats are the best! My mom used to make them for my dad, so they have a special place in my heart. And on my waist!

    1. Thank you. Rootbeer floats were a favorite treat when I was a kid and I made them at home for my kids on summer movie nights. They liked Pepsi or Coke floats better, though. What's wrong with them?! lol

  6. I have one daughter and two sons living. My daughter is very a good about staying in touch (tho she lives 3,000 miles away). one son lives with us and takes care of me in a way that is amazingly wonderful. The other son sometimes remember to call.

  7. I think it depends on the son. My daughter is wonderful, but she lives 3,000 miles away. My oldest son and his wife have moved in here with us to take care of us as we get older. He does all the shopping, cooking and housecleaning! My other son lives 400 miles away and is very busy with his wife's family's health problems, and his daughters' sports schedules. He mostly doesn't answer text messages and almost never calls.
