Saturday 9: This Could Be the Start of Something

Saturday 9: This Could Be the Start of Something (1959)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

Welcome to the first Saturday 9 on 2024.

1) We're beginning the year with an optimistic song about starting something new. Right now, are you feeling positive about 2024?  Since I've been sitting at home all week with Covid it would be easy to say "no," but I'm managing to hang on to my hopefulness. I signed up with Weight Watchers again and placed an online grocery order with Walmart that was all yummy, healthy foods. I've been thinking of all the organizing projects I want to do...and even made a slow start on one today (Friday).

2) In this song, Jack Jones sings that because he's on a diet he declines a rich dessert. Are you trying to lose a few pounds after the holidays?  Hahaha! I'm trying to lose a lot of pounds after all of last year!

3) The specific dessert referred to is a Charlotte Russe, a cake made with custard, fruit, cream, whiskey and gelatin. Preparation sounds like a great deal of work! What's the most recent dish you whipped up in your kitchen?  I peeled an orange last night. Does that count? I haven't been doing any cooking at all this week since I'm sick. Tim's been picking up take-out on the way home every day.

4) The lyrics contrast dining at Sardi's in New York with sunbathing in Malibu. Do you enjoy nightlife or are you more outdoorsy?  I'm way past the days of enjoying going out until the wee hours of the morning. I'd rather spend some time outdoors.

5) This week's song was written by Steve Allen. While best known for his work on TV (he was the first host of The Tonight Show), he was also a composer who felt most creative at the piano. When do you feel most creative?  Probably at work. There is a lot of opportunity there to come up with crafts, science experiments, games, etc.

6) This week's artist, Jack Jones, won a pair of Grammy Awards and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Yet he's probably best known for singing the song that welcomed travelers aboard The Love Boat every week. What TV theme song can you sing along with?  Probably every iconic theme song of the 70's and 80's, but for sure all the sitcoms.

7) In 1959, when this song was popular, "continuing dramas" (aka soap operas) like Young Dr. Malone and Ma Perkins were broadcast daily on the radio. When you turn on the radio, do you listen for news, talk or music?  Music and the news now and then. I have trouble focusing on talk radio and get bored by it.

8) Now let's turn the calendar and our attention from 1959 to 2024. Is there a skill you're looking forward to learning, or improving, this year?  Healthy cooking and meal planning.

9) Have you purchased anything on impulse yet this year?  I've been home sick and bored for a week....what do you think? I've ordered a new journal, a vitamin blend, a storage cart, and a devotional.

News. Ugh! I avoid that like the plague that they are. It's all Gov propaganda anyway, right?!

  10. I'm glad you are feeling better and hope your quarantine time is over soon. I'm glad to not be alone in my lack of attention to talk shows on the radio (or, for me, audio books). I get bored quickly and my mind wanders. Wishing you a healing weekend, Stacy. Hugs.

It's Nearly Here

As I sit here in the glow of the Christmas tree lights, I'm forced to wonder if we will be celebrating Christmas at all. I am on track...
